Why Jesus did not save himself by coming down from the cross?

Was Jesus truly powerless to come down from the cross? Many people are even today repeating the same insults which the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders used to mock Jesus when he was hanging on the cross,
"He saved others," they said, "but he can't save himself! He is the King of Israel! Let him come down from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, 'I am the Son of God.'"
"In the same way the robbers who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him" (Matthew 27:42-44).
They are ignorant of the very purpose Jesus came to accomplish.
